I would recommend driving up fairly early in the morning. If you are really ambitious (or just waking up at 3am from jet lag), then I'd recommend trying to get up there for sunrise. The photo opportunities are awesome. About 10-11am, the fog will come up and it will block the view of the volcano crater from the lookout point, so it's good to get there earlier. We had just gotten up there one morning when the fog came in and blocked the view of the crater. We walked around and read all the plaques, then all of a sudden we heard this collective Ahhh....Oooohhh and looked out to see the fog had lifted to give us a fabulous view of the crater. We had about 15 minutes to take photos and enjoy the view and before the fog came back. It was totally worth it.
It is pretty cold at the top of Haleakala as compared to the beaches. You'll notice the temperature difference as you drive up the volcano towards the top. Definitely take some long pants and a jacket or sweater with you.
If you go to Haleakala, keep your entrance ticket, because it might come in handy during the drive on the Road to Hana. There is a back entrance to Haleakala National Park at the end of the Road to Hana, and if you have your ticket, and it is within the specified number of visiting days, then you'll get into the park for your original admission fee (free the second time within that time frame).
