Maui Beaches

Beaches:

Wailea has some of the best beaches in the world. Last time we went to Maui we spent every day at a different beach, just because I wanted to see as many as I could. The Maui Revealed guidebook is really good with directions to get to the more secret beaches. My favorites are Mokapu beach (this is where we got married), the beach just south of that one (there is a little rock jetty separating them), Wailea beach (in front of the Grand Wailea Hotel), Po'olenalena beach (tiny little parking lot, and it's easy to miss, use the guidebook directions), and Secret beach in Makena (you'll need the guidebook directions to get to this one, you have to park at the side of the road, and go through a cut in the walls between two big walled off houses, to get to this little beach). On the road by Secret beach there is a woman who sets up her fish taco stand and those were really yummy. There was also a shave ice stand along the road there.

Definitely go to Big Beach just before sunset. It's a gorgeous huge beach at the far south end of Makena and it's a nice place to take sunset photos. There are also some nice beaches in Kihei but I liked the Wailea/Makena ones better.

Beach Safety:
I'd recommend taking bottled water with you everywhere. We also used the little plastic boxes on a cord that you hang on your neck for our room & car keys when we went snorkeling at the beach. You can get those at Maui Dive Shop and anywhere they have snorkeling gear. Don't leave valuables in the car, I've heard a lot of locals talk about having their cars broken into at the beaches.

If you are not a strong swimmer, be sure to swim and/or snorkel with a buddy. Also strongly consider using a personal flotation device (like a life jacket, kick board, or noodle tube). Many of the dive shops will be able to rent or sell you flotation devices which will make your time in the water much more enjoyable. Always wear sunscreen and consider wearing a rash guard or some other physical sun protection. The sun is stronger than you think and the cool water will trick you into thinking that you are not getting as sunburned as you really are.
